Talbot County Parks and Recreation Department made history this summer by hosting its first-ever Girls Flag Camp on July 11, 2024. The event saw an impressive turnout, with enthusiastic young athletes eager to learn and play the game.
The camp was spearheaded by Parks and Recreation Director Robbin Steverson, who worked tirelessly to bring this opportunity to the girls of Talbot County. Steverson was supported by a dedicated team of coaches and community volunteers who provided expert instruction and encouragement to all participants.
“This event has been a dream of mine for quite some time,” Steverson said. “Seeing these girls out here, learning, competing, and having fun is incredibly rewarding. It’s all about giving them the chance to experience the sport and build their confidence.”
Throughout the day, the girls received hands-on coaching in the fundamentals of flag football, including passing, catching, and defensive techniques. The camp was designed to cater to all skill levels, ensuring that every participant could improve and enjoy the game.
The coaches and volunteers, many of whom have extensive experience in football, were instrumental in making the camp a success. They provided not only technical instruction but also mentorship, fostering a positive and supportive environment.
“It was great seeing the young ladies gain confidence as the day went on”, said Coach Demarco Mitchell. “Our girls created bonds with the girls from Marion County and Pebblebrook High School and it will be great to see how that transpires as time goes on. It was beautiful to see the way the community came together to support this event. Seeing the senior citizens of the county get involved with this event was awesome as well.”
Parents and community members were also present to cheer on the young athletes, creating a festive and encouraging atmosphere. The success of this inaugural camp has sparked excitement for future events, with many attendees already looking forward to the next session.
“The community’s response has been overwhelmingly positive,” Steverson added. “We plan to make this an annual event and expand our offerings to include more opportunities for girls in sports.”
Talbot County Parks and Recreation Department’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and providing diverse recreational activities is evident through initiatives like this. The Girls Flag Camp is a testament to the power of community collaboration and the importance of empowering young athletes.
